Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik: A Center of Excellence in East Java

Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik (UMG) is one of the leading private universities in East Java, Indonesia. Established on May 25, 1980, UMG was born from the vision of Muhammadiyah, one of the largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, to expand its educational mission and provide higher learning opportunities in Gresik, a region known for its industrial and cultural significance. Since its founding, UMG has grown into a dynamic institution that combines academic excellence, Islamic values, and community service.

Historical Background and Vision

The university was inaugurated by Colonel Wasiadji, SH, who was then the Regent of Gresik. At that time, Gresik lacked higher education institutions, and UMG filled a critical gap by offering local students access to quality education without having to leave their hometown. Over the years, UMG has become part of the extensive Muhammadiyah higher education network, which spans across Indonesia.

UMG’s vision is to be a university that excels in science, technology, and the arts, while remaining firmly rooted in Islamic values. Its mission is threefold: to provide high-quality education, to conduct impactful research, and to engage in community service that addresses both local and national needs. This holistic approach ensures that graduates are not only academically competent but also morally grounded and socially responsible.

Faculties and Programs

UMG offers a wide range of study programs across several faculties, designed to meet the demands of modern society and industry:

  • Faculty of Engineering: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.
  • Faculty of Economics and Business: Management, Accounting, and Islamic Economics.
  • Faculty of Teacher Training and Education: English Education, Mathematics Education, and Early Childhood Education.
  • Faculty of Health Sciences: Nursing and Professional Ners Program.
  • Faculty of Psychology: Psychology with a focus on clinical and community practice.
  • Faculty of Islamic Studies: Islamic Education and Islamic Economics.

These programs reflect UMG’s commitment to producing graduates who are versatile, innovative, and ready to contribute to various sectors, from industry and education to healthcare and community development.

The campus atmosphere encourages students to balance academic pursuits with spiritual development and extracurricular activities. Student organizations, cultural events, and entrepreneurship programs enrich the overall university experience.

Collaboration and Community Engagement

UMG actively collaborates with industries, government institutions, and international universities. These partnerships provide students with opportunities for internships, research projects, and exchange programs. For example, UMG has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with local industries to support applied research and workforce development. International collaborations allow students and faculty to participate in global academic exchanges, broadening their perspectives and enhancing competitiveness.

Community service is also a cornerstone of UMG’s mission. Students and faculty regularly engage in projects such as health campaigns, psychological counseling in rural areas, and training programs for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). These initiatives strengthen UMG’s role as a university that not only educates but also empowers society.

Contribution to Gresik and Beyond

Situated in Gresik, a hub of industry and commerce in East Java, UMG plays a vital role in preparing graduates who are ready to meet the challenges of the modern workforce. Many alumni have gone on to work in manufacturing, education, healthcare, and government sectors. The university also contributes to local innovation, conducting research on construction, Islamic economics, and public policy.

UMG’s emphasis on Islamic values ensures that graduates are not only skilled professionals but also ethical leaders. This combination of competence and character makes UMG alumni highly respected in their communities.
